EMC’s Iomega is bullish on tapping entry-level NAS market

Praveen SahaiThroughout its existential journey, Iomega has been trying to master the art of data storage. But the year 2008 proved to be a decisive landmark for the innovative storage company when $14 billion EMC Corporation acquired it (Iomega). With great alacrity EMC improvised on Iomega’s overall storage prowess, and put it at the core of the newly carved out ‘Consumer/Small Business Products Division’ of the company (EMC). Like most of the IT firms across the globe, EMC also sheds immense focus on ‘consumer vertical’ of the overall business matrix. In fact, Cisco resorted to similar move when the networking giant hived off a separate Consumer/SOHO Group where ‘Cisco by Linksys’ line of networking & storage products are tactically positioned.
Today, Iomega offers one of the broadest range of storage products targeted at
consumer/SOHO vertical including portable hard drives; multimedia hard drives; various REV back-up drives and NAS (Network Attached Storage) products. But, out of Iomega’s scintillating product repertoire, NAS items hold great significance.
In an exclusive interaction with Digital Edge, Praveen Sahai, Head–Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, EMC India & SAARC, says, “The Network Attached Storage (NAS) is one of the remarkable developments the modern age has witnessed. That the information is growing exponentially, and IDC predicts that the world would see a five-fold growth in it by 2012. That an amazing level of information quantum will have to be managed right from its creation to the fag end of its lifecycle; and a large volume of it will reside as files on NAS devices”. Indeed the growth in information has not been restricted to the enterprise entities alone, but has stretched across to SMB (Small and Medium Business) and SOHO (Small Office/ Home Office) sectors. "Like some of the happening geographies of the world, the market in India for entry level NAS has been evolving swiftly as NAS has emerged as an answer to the information management requirements of the Home & SOHO vertical”, says Sahai of EMC.
In the Indian context as well, Iomega offers an exciting range of NAS products including scalable models in ‘Home Media’, ‘StorCenter ix2’, and ‘StorCenterix4’ (in 2TB, 4TB, and 6TB capacities). The company also offers highly versatile rackmounted NAS product called ‘StorCenter Pro ix4-200r’. Built on EMC’s world-class enterprise storage functionality, the StorCenter Pro ix4-200r offers easy file sharing, iSCSI block-level access, fast data throughput, and advanced data protection features.
It is often said that NAS is more an act of software manipulation where data is not only stored but managed, accessed and retrieved efficiently. On this scale, Iomega, an EMC company, is uniquely positioned. “Our products carry the sizzling software value-addition like EMC retrospect, Lifeline, and Mozy Home. This highly differentiates our products from other inexpensive hardware that are available in plenty in the Indian market”, says Sahai.
The quality of Iomega NAS solutions is amply being corroborated by EMC’s wide network of celebrated partners including Neeraj Mediratta, Managing Director, Ace Data Devices Pvt Ltd who says that Iomega line of NAS products offer amazing features, and cutting edge technologies. It’s to be noted that it is Neeraj Mediratta who out of his ‘storage passion’ runs INSIFT (Institute of Storage, Integration and Future Technologies) and has trained, fine-tuned, and certified an army of highly capable storage professionals in the country.
