On August 2nd , HCL Infosystems Ltd headed IT Consortium (including Accor Services Pvt. Ltd and Virgo Softech Ltd) bagged one of the challenging projects from the Government of Madhya Pradesh for implementing India’s largest food-coupon based Targeted Public Distribution Systems (TPDS) in the state. The project which would involve setting up an efficient model of food & civil supplies distribution in the state based on the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) guidelines, would cover the entire state (50 districts and over 20,000 Fair Price Shops) will be implemented in four phases over the period of 16-18 months. As per industry sources the project is estimated to be worth Rs 1,000 Crore. “We really appreciate the vision of the Government of Madhya Pradesh to become the first state in India to allow technology intervention in revolutionizing the PDS which is fraught with issues around efficiency and transparency. Public Distribution System is vital for sustained life of the people living below poverty line and this project is a step in the right direction to make the Public Distribution System more robust and effective, empowering the underprivileged with systems that are truly people centric”, said J.V Ramamurthy, President & COO, HCL Infosystems. This project looks interesting as the Indian parliament has just seen series of adjournments and ugly face offs on the issue of mismanagement of food grains, and feeble performance of public distribution systems in the country. Digital Edge feels that the project can be a role model for other Indian states which can streamline and optimize their respective PDS mechanisms.
