Datawind tablets continue to dominate the India market

In a rapidly transforming India, where public and private domains get extremely charged up for receiving more of things ICT in various forms and manifestations, the market around tablets has shown encouraging signs. In its recent report, IDC (International Data Corporation) India has shown the tablet shipments in India—inclusive of slate and detachable— grew by 14.4 percent in Q2 2016 over the previous quarter to 0.98 million units. The highlight of this quarter’s market scenario is that the business tablets grew much faster than their consumer counterparts. However, the lesser demand from the consumer segment reduced the overall market growth in this quarter as compared to the same period last year. “Tablet market declined as consumer market receded by 12.5 percent year-on-year in Q2 2016, while commercial segment continues to grow at a healthy rate indicating clear shift in the focus of the market”, says Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.
In unit terms, 3/4th of the tablets shipped are below $150 mark, and in this price continuum, Datawind, iBall and Micromax rule supreme. In the mid $150-350 segment, Samsung dominates the market, while the premium $300 continues to be dominated by Apple, driven primarily by its iPad Air 2. Also, premium end of detachable segment spiked in Q2 2016 owing to healthy shipments from Apple’s newly launched iPad Pro 9.7. Moreover, in unit terms, Datawind tops the market with 27.5 percent market share—this is followed by Samsung with 14.7 percent; iBall with 14.3 percent; Lenovo with 11.2 percent; and Micomax with 10.9 percent market shares. Others which also include Apple carries 21.4 percent tablet market share in the country.
